Our tour guide said this stone showed how the Inca cut the stones used to build Machu Picchu. However, Ruth Wright, author of "The Machu Picchu Guidebook: states in part, "Do not be fooled by the rock a modern archeologist used to experiment with splitting techniques. He used the method of the ancient Egyptians - not the Inca! The Inca workmen used hammer-stones, hundreds of which were found in this area."
She goes further to say that the Inca also used bronze axe blades and silver tools. Since I am an accomplished metalsmith, I know that both bronze and silver are too soft to do any type of carving on granite! So, the question still exists as to how the finely carved stones used to build parts of the Machu Picchu site, were actually created.
